Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

Dreams, ambitions & goals

Goals & Ambitions

Discuss the following questions:
  • What goals do you have in your Life?
  • What are your "short term" goals?
  • What are your "long term" goals?
  • Should parents help their children set goals?
  • What are your educational goals?
  • What are your career goals?
  • What are your financial goals?
  • Are goals necessary to achieve success?
  • Is having a goal helpful in motivating a person?
  • Do you think people have fewer goals as they get older?
  • Do you have any goals that you feel are unrealistic?
  • How do people's goals change from country to country?
  • What are the main differences between male and female goals?
  • Which of your goals have you already achieved?
  • How would you feel if you failed to achieve any of your goals?
  • Do you think it's a good idea to write your goals down and tick them off as you achieve them?
  • What do you hope to have achieved by the time you're sixty?
  • What is something you never learned to do but wish you had?
  • What success have you had in this English class? What can you do to be more successful?
  • Do you believe that people must work hard to become successful? Why or why not?
  • Can you think of a successful person from your own county? What do they do? How do you think they did it?
  • What kind of success do you want in the future in your life?
  • What can you do now to be successful in the future?
  • Do you think that money and fame means success?

Ambitions

Ambition is a desire for personal or professional achievement, usually requiring determination and hard work to achieve success.  For some people, ambition gives them a purpose or a goal to strive for. Many people think that a life without ambition is an empty life, while others think that inner happiness can be found without an ambition to achieve a high level career or a high paying job.  Ambition is not just a desire to achieve, but it also involves the action or method of getting to that desire.

Discuss these questions:

  • How would you define ambition?
  • Do you consider yourself to be an ambitious person? Why/not?
  • Do you think it is important to have ambitions?
  • Do you think that ambition can be taught or do you think we are born with it?
  • Does ambition always bring success?
  • What are the positive results of being ambitious?
  • Are there any negative results of being ambitious?
  • What do you think is the difference between an ambition and a dream of doing something?
  • Name three famous people whom you admire for being ambitious.
  • Why are some people determined to succeed at any cost, yet others just about lack any drive whatsoever?
  • What do you think causes a person to be ambitious – family, genes, or the culture in which he/she is raised?
  • Where do you see yourself in ten years?
  • Do you think someone can lose their ambition? What do you think could cause this?
  • Do you think younger people are more ambitious than older people?
  • Do you think one’s social status as a child, whether rich, poor, or somewhere in the middle, affects his/her ability to succeed later in life?
  • Who possesses a greater amount of ambition, men or women? Why do you think so?
  • Which nations have the greatest number of ambitious people? Why do you think so? Are there any countries which lack overachievers?
  • Imagine that you’re a parent. How could you instill a healthy sense of drive in your child?

  • ******************************************************************************

Listen to this discussion about ambition. Then discuss the questions below:

The speaker expresses her view that money is not the most important consideration and that enjoyment of a job is more important. To what extent do you agree with this?

The speaker talks about turning her wish into reality. How do you think she could do this?

    *******************************************************************************

Read through the text below and also try to translate it into Swedish. You probably need to look up some of the words below. These words are your homework for Thursday next week. You should know their meaning, be able to spell them, pronounce them and know how to use them in a context.

Look the words up in an online dictionary
Listen to how they are pronounced in Merriam-Webster

    Vocabulary in Use

The only way to achieve success is to be ambitious, be it in one’s personal life or professional one.  The desire to be the best at everything seems inherent for some people, while others are happy to remain indifferent.

Not me. I prefer to be driven toward a goal. When I worked in lower management at a bank, for example, I greatly desired promotion to upper management. I was eager to complete any task I was given, came up with industrious solutions to problems, and aggressively motivated my team to strive for excellence. I became known as a reliable employee, and was able to attain a few increases in salary. The monetary incentive sure did help to elevate my social status. But by the time I returned home each day, I was tired and incompetent. I was exhausted from the effort I was putting in at work.

I had to remind myself to aspire to be a good spouse and to save some energy for my personal life. Now I resolve not to overachieve in only one area, but to be accomplished and productive in all of them.

    1.

You should be familiar with the political titles below (difference between GB/USA).

Have a look at the link "What is a..." and ask each other in pairs. "What is a.....?" Learn names of occupations in English. Sometimes that is a part of the "listening test" (National test).

    Statsminister = Prime minister

    USA:
    The President (Barack Obama, Democrats)
    Secretary of State (John Kerry)
Secretary of the Treasury (Jack Lew)

    Britain:
Prime Minister (David Cameron, The Conservatives)
Secretary of state OR more commonly "Foreign secretary" (Philip Hammond)
Chancellor of the Exchequer (George Osborn)

    Occupations
    What is a.....? (Different occupations)
What will be your occupation in the future?

Vad behöver du träna på mest inför NP? Reading? Listening?

Gå in på denna LÄNK till Skolverkets sida med exempel på gamla NP.
Välj ett gammalt "Reading-prov". Den översta pdf:en är själva proven. Bedömningsanvisning under varje prov är själva facit. Testa att läs. Skriv svar på separat papper och rätta efteråt.

Du kan även gå in på listening och lyssna på ljudfiler. Öppna proven + skriva svaren på separat papper. Rätta svaren finns i bedömningsanvisningarna.

Towards the end the of lesson you should:

    1.
Send me a mail where you briefly explain, in your own words, what the texts were all about.
(if you only had time to read two texts...that's ok)

    2.
Also, pick out 10 words from the texts you read. Words which you are not familiar with. Look them up in a dictionary and let me know in your mail:

Which 10 Words did you pick and give me a definition of the words (in English).

    An example:

    1. pragmatic - when you are pragmatic you deal with problems that exist in a specific situation in a reasonable and logical way instead of depending on ideas and theories.

    Week 12

    Presentations: English speaking cities

Thursday: Your task (if you have given your presentation)

Jag vill att ni alla tittar i Context (läroboken) på sid 234-23

"Useful expressions for speaking in different contexts".

    *******************************************************************************

English speaking cities around the world!

    What?
You are going to pick a city in an English speaking country somewhere in the world. Find information on the internet about the city so that you can give some basic facts about it. You are also going to take a closer look at one aspect of this city which interests you. It could be everything from: a famous sight, a famous person, a dialect, a sport, music, a tradition, a building, an area, company, current trend. Find information about this so that you can tell your friends about it. You should also find out if we have something similar in Sweden? Is there something in Sweden that could be compared to this?

Your presentation should contain 50% general facts about the city and 50% information about one aspect of the city that you find interesting (+ comparison to Sweden).

    How?
You will give an oral presentation. You will work together in pairs and you will need to divide the work between the two of you. When you give your presentation both of you should be equally involved. Your presentation should take about 10 minutes. You are welcome to use power point/pictures/film clips. It makes the presentation more alive. Use keywords, but only words. Prepare! The more prepared you are the more you can let go of your text and you will feel more relaxed. How do you prepare? You simply give your presentation at home a few times. Audience? A friend/sibling/pet/or simply a wall!

    When?
We will start the presentations in week 12. All of you should be ready to give your presentation by then,

    I still don't understand...!

    Three examples:

    1.
You pick the city Liverpool in the UK and you give a presentation with basic facts about the city. You are interested in football so you present facts about the football club Liverpool FC. You make a comparison between the "football culture" in England compared to Sweden (based on your personal view).

    2.
You present facts about Sydney, Australia. You are also interested in the history of Aboriginals, so you find out more about this topic. You also make a comparison with indigenous people (ursprungsbefolkning) in Sweden "The Sami".

    3.
You are interested in cars/motors. You find facts and give a presentation about the city of Detroit, USA. You also briefly explain the history and current status of the company General Motors (or Ford) which has had a very large impact on this city. You also draw a paralell to SAAB and its impact on the Swedish city Trollhättan.

English is spoken in several differents countries. Have a look at this page for more tips:

    Week 6

    Thursday

Kursplanen i engelska säger att det centrala innehållet omfatta bla:
"Talad engelska med viss regional och social färgning."

    *********************************************************************************
    British dialects

The United Kingdom is probably the most dialect-obsessed nation in the world. With countless accents shaped by thousands of years of history, there are few English-speaking nations with as many varieties of language in such a small space

What is the difference between accents and dialects?

    Dialect = a form of a language which is peculiar to a specific region or social group { from the Greek dialektos "discourse, way of speaking"}

Two examples of dialect in Britain are Yorkshire and Lowland Scots.

Accent = a way of pronouncing a language, associated with a country, area, or social class, an emphasis given to a syllable, word, or note.{from the Latin accentus "tone, signal, or intensity"}.

A person from Birmingham will have a different accent from a person from London.

Dialect can have words that are unique to itself and variant grammatical structures; Accents are variations in the way English is spoken.

    Task 1:
Open this document in a separate window.
Listen to the following clip about English dialects: The UK and try to answer + discuss the questions on your work sheet. (work together with a friend). Write and save your answers, we will go through them in class.

    Task 2:
Now listen to the following 7 clips and try to decide which dialects do they speak?

    1. Dame Judi Dench, Actress

    2. Ray Winstone, Actor

    3. Geezer Butler, member of Black Sabbath

    4. Noel Gallagher, member of the group Oasis

    5. Trailer to the film Walking Ned

    6. John Hannah, actor in the film Four weddings and a funeral

    7. Formula one driver, Eddie Irvine (the first interview)

    torsdag 22 januari 2015

    Thursday!

Pernilla is not here today, but you need to have a look at this:

    1.
Those of you who still haven't sent in your "book talk" you need to do that this week!

Those of you who haven't handed in the novel "Speak" to the library, do that. There are more students who want to borrow them.

    2. Next week we are going to do a Test: An old listening test (NP). To be prepared. Take your computer/headphone and practice more on the following old tests. You have the questions, so you can test yourself by writing the answers separately as you see the questions on your screen OR if you prefer, print the questions.I have now added the "key" as well so you have the correct answers. Please use this to test yourself! (individually)

    The River Police questions
    The River Police mp.3

    The River Police key

    What's my line? questions
    What's my line? mp.3

    What's my line? key

In short + Book talk (for those who haven't...) also more practice on "listening" for the others!

Do you want to practice more on listening have a look at this site: http://www.newsinlevels.com/ (choose Level 3)

    See you next week!

    Week 4

    Wednesday

Wednesday - Pernilla is not here! (as you probably already noticed) BUT, you will do these tasks below until tomorrow. You need a computer + headphones, and yourself!

Finish the listening tasks from last week. Steve Jobs, Jack Whitehall, Melanie Joy. Pick out totally 15 words, 5 from each clip. These words should be new words to you, words that you want to learn the meaning of. Look them up, write them down.

Homework next Wednesday (January 28th) is to know the meaning of your 15 words, being able to spell them and pronounce them. If you look them up in Merriam Webster's Dictionary you will be able to listen to the correct pronunciation (read after, learn).

When done. Listen to these old NP - listening. Try to answer the questions (take notes somewhere and bring them tomorrow). I will bring a key tomorrow:

    The River Police questions
    The River Police mp.3

    What's my line? questions
    What's my line? mp.3

    Done!

    Have a great day! :)

    Week 3

    Thursday

    The art of listening!
Being an engaged listener is one of the most important communication skills you can have.

Think of one person who you feel doesn’t listen to you. How does he/she makes you feel?

Strategies that will improve your listening skills:

    1. If you are introduced to the topic of the listening task in advance. Think! Go through your mind and think what you already know about this topic. Do you know any words? If you just have a headline - guess what the text could be about.

    2. When you are doing a listening comprehension test and you get to read the questions first. Read through and see w h a t they are looking for. What information are they looking for? What are the most important words in the questions? Be alert when you later hear these words. That is probably your answer.

    3. If you can not control the pace yourself (i.e press "stop" and rewind)take notes and keep listening. If you start writing a long answer you will miss out on important information.

    4. IF you are listening for details you need to listen carefully throughout the task. If you are supposed to draw a conclusion or analyze from a complete listening task. For example a dialouge between two people or an interview, then you need to breath, try to calm down and just listen: "what are they actually saying"?

Facts: We speak an average of 120 words per minute, but listen four times faster. Your mind fills the gap by thinking of other things and wandering off. Stay focused. Slow down your listening and listen more than you talk.

    In general:

A simple change in the way we listen will change the way we understand and how we respond. Active listening will increase the odds of success at understanding what the real issue is. This may take some practice, but you will get better at it, and it may even transform a relationship or two.

    ******************************************

    Listening task:

Listen to these various you tube clips and try to answer the questions. Write down your answers. We will later go through the answers together.

    *******************************************************
